Spinning :(

I posted a thread a couple of days ago explaining that my 8 year old ex race TB would constantly nap untill we're on the way home but would be fine if i got off and lead him, the past 3 days he has spun and cantered across the road untill he was back, it's pretty dangerous as sometimes there are lots of tractors etc, but he is really bombproof in traffic, it never fases him, and it's really annoying that he spins because once he's out and has been for about 15 mins he behaves perfectly! Unfortunatly it's just getting him going at the start, does anyone have any suggestions? He's had his saddle, back, teeth etc checked and I've tried being calm with him, i always talk to him and encourage him, also I've tried kicking him on and growling at him, none of this seems to work unless I get off! I really don't want to get into the habbit of getting off him everytime he spins and canters back.

Any suggestions would be helpful as I'm running out of them!

Re: Spinning :(

Lara used to do a lovely 360 spin on her hind legs, a nap, a dropped shoulder then a bucking turn, had a strap fitted between the front 2 D rings to hang onto, pain was her problem, back and feet had rotated pedal bone which was eroded so had come through at some time, shoes caused her bruising ended up with imprint shoes which were working but unfortunately taken from us with a twisted Gut.

Gypsy Gold does not chink & glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.Tonka & Lara my beautiful horses RIP, Nelson,Chloe & Kitty the cats.

Re: Spinning :(

Is there any schools near you you can go to? Just saying cause i heard someone once had a napping horse and they would literally have someone go with them so that if the horse messed about they would slow any traffic coming and the rider would MAKE and take as long as possible (sometimes even getting off) and take the horse to the next school (not your own though) and work him in the school until they felt he had calmed down, however if he behaved on the road to a certain marker i.e. a gate or a road (which they increased over time) they turned right around and came home again and fussed over the horse and turned him out.

It takes a lot of time patience and effort but it might be worth a try.
