What is the purpose of those sheepskin saddle pads??

Hey Guys,

Well i noticed that quite a few horses at Badders etc had them and just wondering whether it made the saddle more comfy for the horse?

I like to use one with Romeo as he is a grey TB with fine, sensitive skin, just to ensure there are no pressure points, I know others don't like them as they can add too much bulk under the saddle but I don't find this a problem : )

I'd rather be riding : )

E2A I find he sweats up less with a sheepskin pad than with a thin cotton pad too, more than likely because of the air held within the fleece : )

my boy has one to pad as he is also i sensitive tb and used to have back problems (an exracer) and even now with a proper fitting saddle he gets slight muscle sorness, very sensitive, so just makes it more comfy, also helps fill out slightly as he has high thin whithers.

my horses are my medicine, without them im even more crazy!

I used those on my old Cob Tonka as his saddle was all leather, the new saddle I have now for Lara is a mixture of man Made material, and leather with wool serge which is very soft and have to use a thin cotton numnah. I know of one or two people who have taken old sheepskin coats and made saddle pads out of them, I for one have inherited 2 have a total of 5 now they never wear out mine makes me look like arthur Daley second hand car dealer.

Gypsy Gold does not chink & glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.Tonka & Lara my beautiful horses RIP, Nelson,Chloe & Kitty the cats.

They provide more cushioning, especially when jumping and they can pad up the saddle. A lot of pros use the same one or two saddles on all horses, and the half pads can help fill in any gaps. I use one for jumping my lad as he has a spine like a razor blade. Also, I like how they look.

I used to have a Griffin Hi wither one for my Irish cob - very comfy for her back, and it soaked up sweat better than the plain cotton ones xx

Yes they can provide extra cushioning, however if you are going to use one I'd advise you get your saddle fitted whilst using one, as if your saddle is a perfect fir without then using one will make it less than a perfect fit if you get me

I use one because it is more comfortable for Ted. This way he doesnt need raisers! :D
