Re: What do you all do for a living and does it fit in well with the horses ?

I work part-time as a Technical Assistant/QA at a local company that makes bricks.  I used to work full-time and then one day I decided to give this part-time stuff a go, coz most afternoons I just gazed out the office window wishing I was with my horses.  I had to make a few cut-backs but it seems to have worked out.  I keep my horses at home - and here comes the bit which enables me to afford them - I live in an attached cottage adjoined to a relatives house and the horses don't have to pay!  Although I have recently replaced the stables and keep the grazing/fencing maintained.  So it's a fair exchange

Until last month I ran a village pub in Cornwall, which fits in with horses really well, I used to ride in the mornings, work lunch, then have the afternoon off and work evenings.

However, I've just moved to Wales and I'm taking a few months off, We have taken a 30 acre farm & separate B&B with 9 bedrooms,  its taken us until today to get it ready to open, but we have a good few bookings this weekend so, so far so good.  We have given ourselves a few months where we don't have to worry too much about money, then I may have to work (but I hope only part time)  My horses are all here with me so life at the moment is like utopia - hopefully it will remain so lol :)

I'm one of the lucky ones, my horses are at home and I work from home running a organic herb company. It can be physical when stock arrives and I have to hump about 25Kg sacks, but it's fabulous knowing you are helping people and their animals in some small way.  I do spend time in the office doing the paperwork, but even this is nice as I can glance out of the window at the horses and sheep.

Down side is because I run it on my own I work 7 days a week if needed and often start at 7am with feeding, mucking out and now thank goodness turning out, then in the office for an hour to prepare paperwork for the days orders. It's then off into the Store to weigh and pack orders before back to the office to book the parcels onto the van for the courier to collect at 3pm. 5pm is hay net prep time, followed by feed prep and then set up the steamer, get the girls in, clean up fields, possibly eat myself and if need be back into office or store to finish orders off. Sit down for an hour before making sure the horses have clean beds, water and fresh hay for bed at 10pm.

But I love it!

I'm a dentist but my surgery is only 20 minutes from the yard.

I would love to have muffin at home and I do have the space but I prefer her to be at a yard where she has a bit more company. At least then when I have a long day there is a;ways somebody to take care of her.

Unfortunatly I'm the only one in the surgery with an effection for horses  but they do have to laugh about all the funny stories with my cheecky mare  xxx

Re: What do you all do for a living and does it fit in well with the horses ?

because i live with my parents in west london, i have a 20 mile drive to the yard which isnt great ;( hoping to find a job near the yard and move out one day: but dont have the money or the job to move to yet.

other than that work fits in nicely, i work as a special needs teaching assistant, which is fun but can be very hard work- but end at 3.30 so plenty of time to drive all the way to the stables. also get state school holidays which is great. however i also care for a young man with special needs every saturday and some evenings and extra in the school holidays: as im not busy enoth! also doing a degree with open university in psychology, so eventually i can become a teacher and actually get paid an ok salary! as at the mo i get paid very little, nothing in the holidays as well :(

on easter holidays at the moment so been doing lots of university work and also been working at the yard

my horses are my medicine, without them im even more crazy!
