Would love it if any of you could give me some help please! 

I am in the process of buying a saddle for my youngster who is 4 in two months! She is 14.2/3 and still growing and is an arab x! I got told that cos shes an arab that she cant have any bigger than a 17 inch saddle... Now is this true? I have been searching for 17inch saddles and I dont mind riding in them at all, but I have been offered a brand new 17 and a half wintec for quite a decent price its brand new but cos its an old style its really cheap. 

But basically, what I wanna know is, cos of her height and breed is it true she cant have a saddle bigger on her back than 17inch? I would be intrested to know tbh! Or even to find a way to measure how long her back is would come in handy? I am buying this saddle from a saddlery shop, so I can get it fitted, but theres no point them coming to try it on, if its gonna be too long for her back in the first place is it? The thing is they only have this one saddle in my price range too =/ 

Im sorry if this dont really make sense, but basically the main thing is, can a 14.2hh have a saddle that is 17 and a half inch seat size? Or would it go past the last rib and be too long for her?

Can you try it on her before you buy it? If so then i would borrow it to try. Make sure that the saddle doesn't go any further back than her last rib. If it goes further back than that then it is too long for her and she could play you up because it is then pressing on her sensitive parts.

Arabs do tend to have very short backs which makes them stong but can limit the size saddle you can have but it is not always the case. I had Coco's new saddle fitted last month and I can't remember which rib he said the saddle shouldn't go past but I remember him commenting on it as although Coco is a big lad he too is short in the back and cant have more than 17.5 inch. 

 

Ideally I would get a prefessional saddle fitter out every time, especially as she is so young as I just dont feel I have the expertise to judge whether a saddle is a perfect fit ort not. I can see that Coco's new saddle fits him well now and how his old one was too narrow and starting to get out of balance for his back but there is more to it than that and I wouldn't want to compromise and potentially get it wrong.

 Absolutely too big. My 16.1 TB takes a 17.5

 Thanks to those who have replied. Yeah I decided the same day before even reading the replies that it wasnt worth trying as it would be too big. Gonna stick to looking for like the 17inchs like I had been doing, was just someone had offered me a 17 1/2, and I wasnt sure but mum was like it would fit her, and I was like it would be too big, but decided to check what other people thought! Thanks anyways :)

 I had a wintec cc at first for my boy and I got a 17.5 instead of 17 as my saddler said wintec sizes come up small.

Saddles vary in back length depending on the brand for example Wintecs have a long back. My old saddle was 17.5 seat kentaur which was shorter in the back than my 17 inch wintec!
 

The 17.5 inch seat is to fit you not the horse. If you are quite petite then you could get away with a 17inch.  Because of the different back lengths in brand, it does not mean you cant have a 17.5 if thats what fits you.

 

In theory, if you are a much larger rider, you wouldnt be expected to have a saddle that is 17" just because your horse is short backed... surely your bum wouldnt fit in the saddle???
 

You would need to suggest to the saddle fitter that your horse is quite short backed and tell them what sort of size, height and weight you are so they can bring a varitey of saddles which will indeed come in different back lengths.

The way i see it is like a pair of jeans... go in one shop and a size 10 fits fine. Go in another shop and the 10 is too big!

 Sounds too big, my youngster is only able to have a 16 inch saddle and she is 14hh nearly however shortbacked. Both my 14.1 and 14.2 are in 17 inch which is the max they can have and one of them is arab cross.

Thanks for the replies. I have already decided its too big, and I normally ride in a 17inch anyway on my other horse so its all cool. The reason I dont want to get a made to measure as she is going to be changing shape as she is 4. Only reason I asked was cos Id been offered a saddle that size quite cheap and brand new so.

Also mankyann, I know seatsize is normally to fit you, but you shouldnt have a saddle to fit you if its too big for the horses back? get what Im saying?

 obviously i dont know the size or shape of your horse, but I can just say that I use a 17.5 inch saddle for my heavy weight gypsie cob so I am guessing that it would be too big.. but maybe try it just too see. I would say deffinately dont buy before you know it will fit xx
