If you have a chance to go hacking with an experienced horse would be very good for your youngster. Like this he could pick up from the other horse that there is no need to be afraid and gain confidence. it`s a scary world out there for a young horse.

HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR HORSE TODAY???

Re: Hacking & Schooling a youngster

My instructor told me once that a horses behaviour should improve once you do more schooling work in the school.

I find with my horse (hes nearly 8 and still a wuss out hacking with tractors and motorbikes) if something scary is approaching, talking loudly and reassuring him that is 'just a big loud car'  'good boy' etc and keeping my leg on helps him alot. The talking distracts the fear a little and the leg pushes him forward to make him feel more confident about going forward and not to run off! You could also try little things like asking for bend or for your horse to soften giving him somthing to do rather than think of the scary object.

And of course if you no your horse may spook at a bike or car, make sure you wear hi-vis and dont be afraid to ask drivers to slow down with arm signals. x
