Re: Flash noseband rant!!!

I think it doesn't help that a LOT of photos in the horse magazines show horses wearing flash nosebands (including YH). They may well only be file photos but if less experienced people see all these horses wearing flashes in the magazines and thats all they can find to buy in the shops, how are they going to know that its not normal? I think if they weren't presented as the norm by magazines etc, then people might be more willing to look for alternatives.

My horse needs a flash so I use one. Don't really think its that big a deal, could probably do with some mroe options without the flash loop, maybe I just don't notice it in my local saddlers because there's a wide variety for flash and non-flash.

I have a crank noseband. I like it!

Re: Flash noseband rant!!!

Ah thank you fredhead, this article really explains what a crank noseband is!! and how easily it can be abused to really be a painful 'gadget' for the horse to wear!! Dont get me wrong i'm not saying those people who have a crank noseband on use it in this way, but i do think they should be aware of what these nosebands are capable of doing!! imo there is no need for cranks at all!!!

''I have heard many excuses for the use of this gadget. Some think it looks nicer. Why? Some say it's better padded and thus softer for the horse. But you can get any kind of cavesson padded to any extent. Some say it exerts an even pressure and better support. What pressure is that supposed to be? Some say it's easier to buckle. Because it's easier to pull tight? Some say it's hard to find a nice bridle without it. And that's sad but true.''

I'm getting my new boy next saturday, hes got a martingale a flash and a huge chunky bit. He doesn't need any of it, he doesnt throw his head up or try infact as soon as i started trotting him he was working on the bit perfectly his flash was pointless and that bit i cant remember for the life of me which one it is. what happened to simple bridles

Re: Flash noseband rant!!!

My horse wears a flash, so personally I don't have a major problem with them as my horse evades the bit without one. Ok, so they may not be the kindest of bridle additions but if they were so 'cruel' do you not think they would be banned for Dressage etc?

there's nothing wrong with cranks persay, no more than any other noseband - it's just annoying when you don't want one cause so many bridles nowadays do have one! If they're done up properly there's no problem with them (though cause they go back on themselves, they can be overtightened far too much), except my horse has a very pony head and a crank would dwarf her!! If I'm right they were originally made for the higher levels of dressage where double bridles are required and flashes can't be used? maybe? lol

I have the Heritage head piece on my bridle, I would have bought the whole thing cause it's nice but a crank is far too wide for her head! I just want to buy a simple, padded, smaller cavesson and I can't find one for a decent price, which is annoying cause I know full well they used to be so easily bought! I did take the loop of one noseband, but I'm clearly incapable of delicate things like that cause I ended up ripping it!

My point wasn't against flashes and cranks so much, just that I dont see why they sell them as standard now when they never used too! I had the same problem when I tried to buy a grackle a while ago, but now they're everywhere too so I should have just waited  I have no problem with people using different bits of gear at all, I just think they should sell cavessons as standard cause I do know of  people who use a flash "just cause it was there" - and those type of people often over tighten them when it's not necessary, if they didn't have the flash, those people wouldn't do that and it makes it easier for those who just want a cavesson! I ended up getting a flat snaffle noseband, which isn't ideal but it'll do!

hehe, ah just thought i had missed the point that crank nosebands had a different use and i had no idea what i had bought.... My horse has a big head, hence the big noseband looking nice lol x

Re: Flash noseband rant!!!

I have a crank on Coco, it came with the Elevator bridle and at the time I had no idea it was any different to a cavesson! I only do it up as if it is a cavesson with 2 - 3 fingers gap and have been told in the past that I should tighten it up as it has all the padding so that you can tighten it up to hold the mouth shut! No chance, it looks nice, he doesn't need his mouth holding shut as he rarely evades the bit (only if we have a nappy tantrum does he open his mouth but the tantrums are so rare now!) and so why woould I ever want to tighten it up?

This is how i would use a crank cocosmum, i think they look quite nice!! Just like any peice of tack i suppose it could be abused, same as a flash and also a normal caveson could be overtightned.

Tommy just wears a plain cavasson - I put him in a flash when we went hunting then took him straight out of it when we got home.  cant see the point of it myself, didn't make any difference to Tommy still had no brakes :)

my share wears one but its just to help control her cos shes so headstrong sometimes and its really loose

i agree, though. if (in most cases except when people aren't experienced/old/strong enough etc) people with tempremental youngsters etc can control them without flashy tack, double reins... the list goes on... then why do top riders use it all? just for show, in my eyes

so... this was Millie and the rest of the gang from Thistlebank stopping by to say 'Hi!'
