Riding isn't an exercise?!?

It really bugs me when my friends say that riding isn't exercise and say it doesn't count as a sport, don't no about anyone else but when i have a intense lesson i feel like i've had a good work out! What are other peoples thoughts?

Re: Riding isn't an exercise?!?

Hahaha!! Let them try riding a horse then! My thighs currently ache from trying to hold a rather excited bouncy 5yo together, & my shoulder hurt from said bouncy 5yo trying to get into a tug of war with me.

I came out the ring after 1 jumping round of 11 jumps & was red in the face, out of breathe & asked my mum if she had any oxygen lol. I do need to imrpove my fitness, a few months off riding really makes a difference xx

Ya, how can they say riding isn't exercise?? It's even a sport people! That's why we have it at the olympics! They should try mucking out a horses stable, plaiting a tail and mane, jump a course of show jumps and go through an intense horse riding dressage camp and THEN they'll understand.

These people really annoy me, because horse riders are really strong in their stomachs! AND legs.

Grr, it is so annoying.... but we do just sit there afterall!! :P

yeah, and the rest and theres all the chores to do before you can even get on!!  i think people are fooled especially by the top dressage riders who really do look like they are just sitting pretty, unfortunately though i still make it look like its rather hard work, and then there is the fact that there are still so many older people who cant possibly still be fit who manage to win at the top of the sport which again just proves it cant be that hard, physically or otherwise lol, not a real sport at all like, i dont know, golf or darts now is it!!

I have a pretty unattractive 6 pack, giant thighs and some proper man-guns from riding/mucking out/hiking to the field!!! I'd be a blob of lard if it wasnt for my horses!

oh dear lord, come round my neck of the woods and there are more than a few obese riders... i dont know how they do it or how they get on and off the horse!

I was at MIDARC last year and saw this woman in a class who had to stop cantering a horse mid show as she was so out of breath. She was of course over weight! It was hilarious but at least she was having a go.

I have heard so many people say that riding is easy blah blah. It is annoying but they never have a go to find out how hard it is. after riding for a long time or after an hour lesson.... i turn into John Wayne lol

I don't understand how there can be such over-weight riders out there. I was shocked the other day a woman who weighed somewhere between 15-17stone getting on a tb.

Riding is exercise, i had this augrement with my dad who i told to get on the horse and see how it feels to ride for a a hour on a horse who doesn't feel like that today! I don't think he could walk for 2 days after a 45min session.

It has been calculated thay any two thoroughbreds picked at random will on average have more than 13% of their genes in common.

In my opinion, riding is completely an exercise. Thinking about how you feel when you finish riding........
