 Hi everybody!

I wonder if anyone can help me. My horse had to be put out in the fields due to an injury. He is supposed to be out 24hours a day for 6 to 8 months.

He is in a good paddock, with daily attention and care. This weekend I went there and he was as lame as he had ever been.

I had spocken to his vet last monday, when she went to see how he was doing. She told me he was much better from his tendons, and that everything was okay. So obviously when I got there and he was lame I immediatly called her and she came to see what was wrong with him.

It turns out he has a bad case of hoof thrush. He had to be given anti-inflamatory and antibiotics injections. The vet advised us to put him inside a box for one month and then turn him out again.

He has really bad hooves. I'm afraid that when he is turned out again his hooves get worse again. The fields are really wet. ..

Do you have any advice on how to keep a horse's hooves in good condition when the fields are wet? (there are "mini lakes" on the places where he walks =P)

First of all remove his shoes, if you haven't already done so.  Whether he is in or out make sure the soles of his hooves are cleaned properly then apply stockholm tar making sure you can it right down into the gaps and cracks between the frog and soles.

 His shoes were removed 4 months ago when he went to the paddock. 

We will start putting hoof tar but he might need something more don't you think?

His hooves are terrible and he's only been out for 4 months, so how will we keep him in the fields for 5 more months without this happening again?

That was one of the problems with Lara a rescue thrush in all frogs used the blue spray from the vets, kevin bacons solution, and Stockholm tar long hard job to control, mine had soft soles, hole in sole, mud fever, rain scald, BC2, worms and tapeworm. Was told to use Cavello boots to take her out as no shoes at the moment.

 SCMSL Why don't you look into hoof boots that can be worn in the field? try the cavallo website and there are good prices on them on ebay. Shoes need to be removed as they're designed for barefoot horses x

silvertrasol is really good for getting rid of thrush and helps prevent it,, amazing stuff, worked wonders on spag ast year =D

other than that cider vinegar is pretty good for it

ride a gypsy vanner... it'll make your butt look smaller

Thanks for your help!

 

I've spoken to the vet and she said not to use boots as water will get inside of them and make things even worse.

 

I've thought about putting adhesive tape all around his back hooves - maybe it could make them water proof?

 

We are putting animalintex in his hooves for a couple of days to clear the infection and try to control the fungus, we'll see..

most hoof boots are not desinged to be worn out in the field. I don't really think it would be a good idea to but them on. corneuceasant do hoof creams designed to work in specific conditions. I use dry and brittle on our tb but you ma find they have a good one there. ruby had a bad feet at one point, now we apply it every two days and the difference is incredible.

It has been calculated thay any two thoroughbreds picked at random will on average have more than 13% of their genes in common.
