Re: help...green bags or black bags....(haylage)
Im so so sorry but im pissing myself laughing here. The amount of horse people who say i can not feed this bale of haylage as its in black wrapping it could be silage it really makes me giggle. If you are buying it from a farmer who makes haylage for horses then you shouldnt have much to worry about they bale it in any wrapping they can get cheap the more they pay the more you will pay.
Haylage is haylage it can be wrapped in any coulor rapping from black to pink with blue spots.
Im on a farm and we make both haylage (for my horses and the cows) as well as silage (for cows ONLY) and it all is wraped in the same wrapping.
Silage is a lot wetter and smells a lot sweeter you can tell this even before undoing the wrapping normaly it is cut and baled the same day where haylage is dryer (nearly ready for hay) is turned a couple of times and baled before it is to dry. It is still sweet smelling but not as sickly.
As for the colour rapping we have baled both haylage in black and green this year we run out of black so we had to change to green as this is all we could get.
If you are buying in then you should ask if its haylage but if you are getting it from someone who supplys horses then im 99.9% sure they will NOT sell you silage.
What you should be worried about is if the wrapping has any holes in (in which should be taped up ASAP) i never feed it to my Arabs if it is turning white as this is the sugurs building up and its the start of it turning so our cows get this, they can go made not my Arabs ha ha ha
