help...green bags or black bags....(haylage)

Hi,

im wondering if any of you horsey people can help me,now, for the last 2 years i have given my boy haylage that has been wrapped in black bags, and then gradually through the spring into summer,i give him the green bales.I have just been told, however, that i shouldnt be giving my horse the haylage out of the black bales,as its actually meant for the cows and its silage....now,being the sceptical person that i am,i do not know what to think,do i carry on giving him black haylage,or the green haylage....and what is the difference with the two of them?

thanks guys...x

Normally green bags are haylage and black bags are silage however the bales im using are black and are haylage just what this farmer does. You can tell the difference silage smells much sweeter.

As above, it depends what th farmer uses to wrap. I have always used black bales.... which is haylage. My farmer also does wrapped hay in black bales. I once had a green bale and asked whats the difference and farmer said its whatever he had left to wrap it in!

As long as you ask for haylage... you should get it. If you are unsure, ask the farmer. Silage is usually wetter too :D x

Re: help...green bags or black bags....(haylage)

Im so so sorry but im pissing myself laughing here. The amount of horse people who say i can not feed this bale of haylage as its in black wrapping it could be silage it really makes me giggle. If you are buying it from a farmer who makes haylage for horses then you shouldnt have much to worry about they bale it in any wrapping they can get cheap the more they pay the more you will pay.

Haylage is haylage it can be wrapped in any coulor rapping from black to pink with blue spots.

Im on a farm and we make both haylage (for my horses and the cows) as well as silage (for cows ONLY) and it all is wraped in the same wrapping.

Silage is a lot wetter and smells a lot sweeter you can tell this even before undoing the wrapping normaly it is cut and baled the same day where haylage is dryer (nearly ready for hay) is turned a couple of times and baled before it is to dry. It is still sweet smelling but not as sickly.

As for the colour rapping we have baled both haylage in black and green this year we run out of black so we had to change to green as this is all we could get.

If you are buying in then you should ask if its haylage but if you are getting it from someone who supplys horses then im 99.9% sure they will NOT sell you silage.

What you should be worried about is if the wrapping has any holes in (in which should be taped up ASAP) i never feed it to my Arabs if it is turning white as this is the sugurs building up and its the start of it turning so our cows get this, they can go made not my Arabs ha ha ha

Boyfriends come and go but my Arabs are for life

green bags..

A reusable shopping bag, sometimes called bag for life is a type of shopping bag which can be reused several times: this is an alternative of single use paper or plastic bags. It is often made from fabric such as canvas, woven synthetic fibers, or a thick plastic that is more durable than disposable plastic bags, allowing multiple use.

Sorry, but what does this have in relation to wrapping extremely large round bales of haylage?  A shopping/refuse bag is no good for this, for a start no where near large enough and would not be able to exclude air entry which would turn the haylage!

haha, i think this may be some sort of marketing/advertising bot?

can you imagine a farmer selling haylage in a carrier bag?!

Poke a few holes in a tesco bag and use it for a haynet?
