difference between a normal pelham and a rugby pelham?

just wondering really. i used to have Minty in a normal pelham until somebody stole it (not going into that story!!!) and i want to do some ridden classes with him next year, so i think i'll need to put him back in a pelham for this, with double reins of course, as he gets very excited when being ridden in a group, never mind at a show! i think the rugby pelham looks more attractive with double reins as it gives the illusion of a double bridle. however is there any difference between the two?

I may be wrong, but I am under the impression that the rugby pelham can be used with a sliphead to give the illusion of a double bridle. Other than that there is not much differrence, if I am wrong I'm sure someone will correct me.

i don't think it is intended for use with a sliphead - just as it is because the extra ring gives the illusion of the double bridle.

does that even make sense?! it's too late for me to be making much sense lol!

I dont know but my vulcanite pelham I used on my cob was many times thought to be a double bridle, yes and using the double reins is best not those awful roundings which should be banned as they use both parts of the bit at the same time, with double reins you just need the snaffle part most of the time, could ride with completely loose reins and he would do an extended walk, which was noticed by others.

Re: difference between a normal pelham and a rugby pelham?

i've been doing a bit of google research and coming up with a lot of forums. the majority of people are saying to attach a rugby pelham to a double bridle instead of a sliphead as it looks more tidy. they are also saying that without the sliphead/double bridle then the ring of the rugby tends to flap about and make the reins lose a bit of contact, if that makes sense? i understand this. i might invest in a nice double bridle. the bridle minty is in right now is a grackle, the normal flash noseband & headband for it is beautiful and very padded and swish looking, i don't know if i'll get a slip of that quality to match it. must have a shop around lol

I'd always use it in a double bridle or with a sliphead, otherwise the extra ring flaps about, can distract the horse or irritate them and isn't neat and tidy, which is not what you'll want for showing! Rugby pelhams are great for horses with mouths too small for a double, or horses/riders not ready for the double bridle.. plus many judges much prefer them to a normal pelham.

yeah i would be intending to use it with a double bridle so i didn't have to swap bridles/nosebands around all the time (as i said he's normally ridden in a snaffle & grackle so would be a pain when i wanted to take him to a show!) i have tried a double bridle on him before, with the 2 bits, and i think his mouth is a bit small for one. i don't think there's any point in introducing him to 2 bits when it'll only be once or twice every fortnight he will be ridden in one. as i said, he used to be in a pelham and went quite well in it so he won't mind very much haha (or he might - will probably stop him pissing around which makes him mad!)
