Abcess

Has anyone ever had a horse or pony with an abcess, who is still sound?. My mare has an abcess in her front hoof, but she is sound, this has amazed me and some other people, because I thought horses with an abcess are very lame!. But just before Christmas she went lame, showing the signs of an abcess heat in the hoof and swelling up the leg(because she had been galloping around the field on the same day, I thought that she had just pulled her leg), then a few days later she went sound and this week my farrier came out to shoe her and pus came out in the same hoof. She was sound prior to this and the treatment of the abcess and still is now with one shoe off!. Any ideas? [:)]

Re: Abcess

Normally they cannot weight bear because of the pain the pressure creates. They become sound quite quickly as it begins to drain

Re: Abcess

Its unusual for a horse to be sound if its got an abscess. They get more lame as the abscess progresses and the pressure builds up. My chap has rubbish feet and is prone to a bit of pus. He's not that noticeably lame when it first starts & to anyone else he'd probably look ok. Its just that I'm so used to his 'I have pus in the foot routine' that I can spot it before the abscess has taken hold. He's really annoying because he won't react to the hoof testers so its more difficult for the vet/farrier to locate the pus. Its amazing when you see horses that have been on three legs after the pus has been released and they're almost sound again.

Re: Abcess

having suffered an abcess in my own foot your mare must have the most amazing pain resiliance!! if the abcess was not pressing on anything it is possible that she was not feeling it but there is not much room in a foot so I am amazed she was not lame! hope it clearing up well now.

Mine dosen't always react to hoof testers either Warrior. We had an emergency trip to vet hospitial when one vet though it may be an abcess and two more thought it was his pelvis that was the problem...it was a really deep seated abcess. It didn't help that he is a little precious nad stood miserably 'hanging' his leg as if it wasn't conected to his body though. Think he enjoyed the fuss [:D]

Re: Abcess

Similar thing happened to Warrior, Haffyfan. Vet's couldn't find the site of the pus, even though I was adament it was at the point of frog, and decided it could be a fractured pedal bone. X-ray showed nothing so deep seated bruising was the next diagnosis. The next day, I was calling the vet out because Warrior kept going down, laboured breathing, non-weight bearing on the hoof & stood with it buckled right over at the fetlock joint. After a jab of pain killer and antibiotic I was told he may have to go to the vets as it could be an infection of the deep tendons. Next day, different vet came down to jab him again & she had a look at the foot. After much cursing she found the site of the infection, at the point of frog. The difference in him once the pressure was released was amazing & the sense of relief I had was pretty good too!!

Re: Abcess

my boyfriends horse has had abscesses and she was so bad. Vet even mistook it for azoturia as she went a bit lame and then half an hour later she seized up. by the time the vet came she was as stiff as a board and couldnt walk any distance at all. He kept giving her injections for the pain and told us to give her bute. she just seemed to get worse and worse. a week later after several trips by the vet, she was very lame only on one leg. he told me to soak her foot in warm water twice a day and the abscess burst through her coronet. after that she was a lot more comfortable. she hasnt had another one since that time but has had them before which werent as severe.. she had an operation to remove a chipped bone caused by a knock in the trailer, which wasnt related to the abscesses. the farrier reckons she has abscesses as he reckons a farrier has tried to shoe her in the past when she has had laminitis (which must have been sooo painful). she absolutely HATES farriers, which isnt surprising. my farrier has been quite good with her and now she accepts him apart from snorting at him!!!

Re: Abcess

My cob, Bobby, has gone lame with an abcess and I found a really nasty sharp stone on his stable floor, right where he stands to eat his hay!! It must have been in the straw cos' after a thorough search I found 14 more stones - I was horrified. Obviously when I shake his new straw up to top his bed up I don't hear them drop. I was only alerted to this cos' I heard a clinking sound on the metal prong of the pitchfork. I'd just blamed my poor blacksmith for cutting his feet too short [:I] cos' Bobs went lame a couple of days after he'd been. So now I'm poulticing his foot every day - thanks for the tips about soaking in warm water with Epsom salts. What puzzles me though - if the abcess has to burst through the coronet band doesn't using animalintex keep drawing the pus downwards and delay this happening? Bobs has got a hole in his hoof to the side of his frog, quite near the inner edge of his shoe, and when the blacksmith pressed the side of it liquid oozed out. I hate to see Bobby lame. He's on daily poulticing and painkillers at present - I wonder if he ought to have a course of antibiotics as well?

Re: Abcess

If stuff has come out thats great just keep the hole open and clear and it will drain itself. They only track up to coronet band in severe cases...basically it is the weakest part of the hoof so the only bit they can burst through as yours has a drainage hole at present it shouldn't do that and your farrier did the right thing. If you keep it clean and it's draining he should be sound soon..then the trick is to stop it getting re-infected which is not easy when wet and muddy! Your farrier may keep it open and dug out when he comes for a while too so as not to 'close' in further infection...that's what mine does whenever he suspects grit or something may have found a way in and we have...touchwood...not had an abcess for over a year now.
