just because your horse doesnt come to you doesnt mean letting him go.

have you tried parelli ?? it seems that after i did this with my horse he follows me everywhere.

 When i first got my horse willow she was kept in all the time so when we got her in the summer she lived out all summer like all of the horses at my yard we could never catch her, i mean for a whole month. We used to spend hours trying to catch her by using treats and she always got turned out with a headcollar on. I just had to keep trying and never gave up becuase ones you start you have to keep going. When i brought her in i played with he rin the school, did allot of work on getting her to follow me aorund the school and stuff so she would learn to trust me.

And now i can turn her out without her headcollar in the big feild and she comes as soon as she sees me becuas she has learned to trust me. Altought she wont come in for anyone else but me or my mum so when the yard needs to worm the horses they need to get me to come up to catch her while she gets her wormer, haha. Dont think that will ever change though but she come to me no problem and is always happy to see me :)

To say you would sell the horse becaue you cant catch it, seems madness. If it bucked you off everytime you rode or kicked you in the stable each night, then I would recommend you did. Yes, get everything checked out, i.e teeth, back and tack, just in case he sees being caught means being ridden and, that could incur pain. It sounds to me that he is just being a naughty twat. Some horses are buggers to catch. I woudnt mess around, I would use electric fencing, electrify it with a battery/energiser and have the horse in a small area. You can always move it when the grass gets eaten down. Then the horse doesnt have room to run off. Then you can practise catching him. Different things work for different horses, some with food. I was once told that if you have a horse thats difficult to catch, put them in a small area, then every day go in, catch them, take them out, release them, catch them, take them out, take them back in, just repeat it over and over again, even if you do it 100 times in one day.

nothing is acheived through giving up apart from regret...time is all you need. perhaps hes had a bad experience with catching in the past or a stable/gate problem making him to scared incase it happens again...instead of getting angry and anoyed why not try to use the situation to your benefit...a friend of mine had a similar problem with her new pony due to a previous bad experience. all she had to do was spend an hour or two each day just sitting out in the field with the horse so that it got used to her being there, each day she got a little closer (treats or a bucket can help) but no headcollar...only a rope. soon enough the horse seen her as his field companion and began to take interest.

This pony at my riding school used to kick and run round for hours and never let you get close, now I turn him out without a headcollar and he canters over:) I just never gave up, outdid him with stubborness;) I used to get a massive bucket with some mix in and crouch down with my back to him playing with the food, feeding the other horses in the field, until he eventually wanted to know what all the fuss was about and as he came near I continued to ignore him and he got jealous of the other horses and annoyed I turned my back on him and then finally I sorta hopped forwards and let him put his head into the bucket and although he was wary and took a few goes he eventually with only dragging me round in a few circles accepted that I wasn't letting go and that he got food so we were even;) Just never give up, be as stubborn as your horse:)xxx
