A new study has been commissioned based on mint being a natural curative for laminitis. Apparently theres a compound in it that can reduce the effects of the nerve damage (found to be the source of the recurrent pain- which is why traditional anti inflammatories dont work well) Does anyone feed mint as Im aware you can now buy it in bulk to add to feeds. I can get more details of the study if anyone wants to read up on it.

The study is funded by The Horse Trust and is led by Prof Sue Fleetwood Walker and is taking place at Edinburghs Royal School of Veterinary Studies. Ive contacted The Trust for details so hopefully should receive some more information. The only details I have so far are that the team discovered in 2006 that mint derivatives can treat chronic pain and as laminitis pain is a combination of swellling AND neuropathic pain it could be useful. I will keep you updated with any new info. Check out thread for hoofcare consultation document re barefoot trimming- chance for everyone to have a say!
