I give Ptarmigan around 3-5 carrots a day. And now i have herd they cause colic is that true? Thanks B

Anything can cause problems in large quantities, i doubt 3-5 carrots a day will cause her any harm :) I wouldnt worry :)

hi i also give my mare 3/4 carrots cut lenght ways a day in her feed with 1 apple chaff plus some mix and she is also fine so dont worry.[:X]

Never had a problem with them- where has this come from. Too much of anything can be a bad thing so its the same rule with any food, little, often and introduce slowly.

I was jusr searching though yahoo answers about horses and one vet said it is a quick way to give your horse colic[:(]

the only reason a vet said that is cos carrotts are basically made up of water and if u drank loads of water, u bloat and get tummy ache- same principal. if u fed ur horse 10 carrotts a day, its not advisable but i stil dont think it would actually do any harm, but depends of the tolerance of each individual horse. u got 2 b more careful of apples 2 b honest as they contain acid and that causes colic more than u would imagine. but dont worry, what ur feeding ur horse is fine it seems 2 b the average most ppl feed their horses x

Thanks guys, ohh...just one more question...[;)] I give ptarmigan a swede ( hang it up in stable )once every 2 weeks, will they do her any harm? She LOVES them[:p]

Twinks01, from what i can read from your text speach, you're claiming apples are bad for horses? My vet and EDT along with surgeon that my horse had to see decided that my horse *had* to eat at least 1 apple after *every* hard feed meal had been finished.
