How long is your horse's tail?

Silly question time I'm afraid.

I was grooming Cally tonight and thinking that I should snip an inch off the bottom of her tail soon as it is getting close to touching the ground. It is normally fetlock length, or longer as it grows. I had a glance at the ponies she shares her field with and their tails are much shorter, about half way up the cannon.

How long is your horses tail? Do you keep it trimmed to that length or does it only grow that long? I was wondering if poeple trimmed them shorter for riding reasons, or to make them easier to maintain, or just that not all horses grow as long a tail. I'm just curious.

I think people trim them to keep them clean - Tommys is really long I trim it when its almost at the floor - but his blond locks are my pride and joy and we keep them extra clean.

Minty's tail is just a tiny bit above his fetlock. I like to keep him traditional fjord type. however, Loki is more sporty so i trim his feathers (don't do Minty's), pull his mane and keep his tail at a length probably halfway between his hock and fetlock. he looks better this way. in the winter i completely take off feathers & tails at the hock on my shetlands as they are close to the ground and tend to stand in the mud. also helps prevent mud-rash.

Norwegian Fjords - the golden horses with the golden hearts. Minty, Loki, Teiko, Willow, Cherry & Charlie - my lovely ponies :)

see i keep riley's long tbh, and his mane the same. in his tails case few cms below his fetlock and his mane is allowed as long as it holds condition! i have to take some of the bushiness.

It has been calculated thay any two thoroughbreds picked at random will on average have more than 13% of their genes in common.

i cut Prides level with his hocks in November and it grows to his fetlocks by June, so he has a full  thick tail ready for the summer

My youngsters is on the floor when he is standing still it drags but as he is an Arab when he moves his tail is up so its just above his fetlocks unless he is being an arab and has his tail over his back, he has a very thick tail to which makes look so nice lucky for me he is bay so it dont show the dirt.

My older Arab hasnt much tail left it seems to be dropping out and its got very very thin.

Ive never cut any of my Arabs tails as ive always been told Arabs are to be left natural and never have there tails trimed or pulled and manes are also not to be pulled so ive never done it even though my are happy hackers (or will be)

1 less job i supose. ha ha

Starlett`s tail is just down to her fetlock. She stands on straw and if the tail gets to long she keeps standing on it and pulls hair out. Starlett has a nice tail and I don`t  like her making it thinner.

Shuna's is fairly long, halfway down her cannon, but Fallons is a nice short just-below-the-hock - less muddy, doesnt kack up and get dreadlocked the same way as a long one!

Muffins is really long. Just above the ground. But I do keep her tail in a tailgator. Keeps it nice and clean. She's got the most beautiful tail ever when I take it out!! x
