Thank you everyone for you touchin words. When it happens to yourself you think you are the only one. To say it is nice seems wrong but your words of kindness and offers and advice are so gladly taken xxx

I think only you will know when you are ready for another horse, as everyone is different. What you have to remember is that you aren't replacing your last horse, just getting another friend. You will always remember them seperately.

I am sorry to hear of your loss though. As has already been suggested, maybe go and see this other horse. You will probably know when you meet them whether it is the right thing to do or not.

Good luck and take care.

Re: When is the right time to replace a deceased friend

there is no right or wrong time to get another horse. it's a personal choice/preference.

i lost my old mare in 2005 and although i have moved on and can talk about her i still have moments where i miss her like she's only just gone.

after i lost her i swore to myself that i wouldn't get another one, i told my OH that i can't go through the pain again. after 9 months i felt lost and empty so i started to look for a little shetland or something to just spend the time with and enjoy again but i came across Finn, he has restored my faith in so many things in the time i've had him, he's helped me through some tough times and i admit i would be lost without him these days.

i thought he would have to be pts recently (in fact most of this year) and i thought if i lost him then it would really be the end of me having horses. luckily he has proved everyone wrong and i still have.

so do what you feel is right, you will know when the time or horse is right for you. i saw hundreds of ads but none stood out for me, Finn's ad made my heart flutter and i knew he would be the one!

Re: When is the right time to replace a deceased friend

I lost my mare ten years ago next year and I still miss her.  I will never have a horse that will replace her, as many have already said, you can never replace.  It would be like replacing a best friend, it just doesn't happen.

I have another horse who is now 28, he mourned her with me so I don't think it will be long before I have to go through it again.

Again as others have said, go and see this horse, the way I would think of it is that everything that you and your horse learned together, everything they taught you, can go and help other horses now.  I would do it in tribute to my friend who I had lost, my own way of saying thank you.

That is just me though and you must do what is right for you.  I am so sorry to hear of your loss you have my deepest sympathy.

When I lost Cindy it took ages to adjust I felt I'd lost part of myself totally bereft.  Found Thea the following year and had her 7years before she was pts I'd already been told about Sami before hand and as she was local and I wanted another Arab I went to see her and bought her home the same week.  It wouldn't suit everyone I'm sure but she was there at the right time.
