As most of you know we sorted out Hilton's loading problem. Well, today I was meant to have a lesson-was supposed go just like normal.
Warning-this is going to be a long one as I need to vent :P sorry guys.
There was a guy next door shooting a pistol or something similar whilst I had him on a lead rope ready to load him(mum was preparing the trailer) and the noise spooked Hilton. I took him away and five mins later went to load him.
He usually takes five mins to load as he's quite stubborn but when he decides he's ready he just walks straight on. Well this gun went off again and he heard it, spooked and hit his head. He now has a graze and a slight cut where his browband would go, he was shocked and went a bit dosey but didnt get worried.
SO we decided even if we didnt make it to the lesson we would have to load him otherwise he'd be totally put off.
Anyway, i then over 2 hours trying to gently coax him into the trailer, trying all food items and encouragement he just stood there and basically went to sleep.
When i decided enough was enough and began to give him a gentle tug on the lead rein he wasnt having any of it and started doing small rears.
SO after more agro i decided to get him off and load him in a different place (in the paddock facing towards the stables).
Well he was ok for a bit (i'd swapped the lead rein for a lunge line so if he reared I could give without letting go)
But he proceeded to rear and then gallop off (dragging me through the paddock until I had to let go as I was receiving rope burns :S.
He lost a shoe in the process and panicked until we showed him mit at which point I grabbed him. Tried twice more and the same thing happened (even with me taking all partitions out).
In the end I decided enough was enough and after 3 and a half hours his dangerous behaviour got me thinking it just wasn't worth it.
He's never scared or anything, just refuses to go forward-and if you ask anything of him he rears in protest. He doses-It's infuriating!
So now all the hard work I put in loading and reloading is down the drain and I have a horse which knows how to show us he means business to the point where he doesn't care if he kicks you or lands on you. As i'm totally against any violence this is a tough one.
I'm thinking it's time to call in the experts?
Sorry for the rant.Needed to get that one out .
