Re: this makes me sick, I barely managed the first minute...
This is extremely saddening but unfortunately both of those videos offer only a taster of the true treatment of horses in abbatoirs. I have done a lot of research and campaigning for their cause, but find it ironic how people can be so disgusted by this treatment of horses when it is either widely unknown or readily accepted that cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and dogs etc (for the leather ans fur indistries) experience far, far worse treatment.
What that second video does not show is what happend behind the scenes. Without wishing to go into graphic detail, animals of all species that enter slaughterhouses are starved and dehydtrated, beaten, trample each other in tiny enclosures, usually bled whilst still alive, and not uncommonly even when their conscious. This all happens in UK abbatoirs and are the norm in countries abroad where animals from the UK are often shipped when theiy don't meet UK abbatoir standards.
It isn't really the shooting of the horses in the videos that I have a problem with - I don't like it, but if it is done correctly (and not with a rifle!) then it can be as quick and painless as possible, almost instantaneous. Yes, we kill animals for their meat, fur, skins, milk etc - but is it really necessary to do so in such a way?
