Fun jumping exercises?

(First of all, hello, i've just joined!)

I have been allowed to do some small jumps with the horse i ride, AJ.  I am thinking of taking him to some SMALL (i.e the smallest class at the show!!) jumping in the new year, does anyone have any jumping exercises (no grids please, i've never done them with him) that are easy but would prepare him?  The arena i ride in is too small for a course and there aren't enough fences.

Re: Fun jumping exercises?

well you are going to have to jump a combi at a show... so a small grid is going to be essential!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also try dog legs.

you could also do chase me charlie :)

if you dont know what that is you start off with a small jump and make it higher and higher until you knock it down. its a great game to play with you friends.

you could also play block elimination, which is where you start of with a row of blocks and slowly keep taking a block away everytime untill your down to one, this is also fun to play with freinds.

Chase me Charlie & Grids are all good ways to preparing him for a course. I would then go down to the local showground and maybe hire out the showjumps first, at my local you can do this for £15 a horse. Then if all goes well, try a small clear round and get clear, so you and the horse can get used to courses. Good luck xx

Make a small course with some small jumps and change the direction and jump numbers.

Re: Fun jumping exercises?

Grids Grids and more grids. There will almost always be at least one combinaton (or grid) in a course and if your horse has never done them then he may well have problems when you actually get into the ring. Grids are really easy and just get your horse used to jumping more than one fence as well as helping them and you with striding etc. If your arena isn't big enough for even a small course is there nowhere else you could set up a small course of say 5 or 6 fences.....make a double or treble (I know a grid, but trust me it's worth it!), a cross, a straight and a small spread as these are all fences you're going to come across in any jumping competition however small.

Good luck :-)

Re: Fun jumping exercises?

I just noticed the bit about aren't enough fences.....There's loads of things you can make jumps out of that you could maybe try if you're short of actual jumps. Wings can be made out of tyres piled on top of each other, sturdy buckets, barrels, blocks....basically anything and poles can be made out of a few things, broom handles, plastic piping, road works planks (if you're lucky enough to find a few lying about of course) etc.

Another good idea to prepare hhim is to make your jump as scary as possible.....fillers, plastic sheeting, buckets, tinsel, basically anything to make your jump a bit more spooky and less inviting as you'll often come across a 'scary' fence at a show too :-)

Wow i didn't see all these replies!!

I've done a jump with some small barrels and buckets underneath, he was a bit shocked lol!!  I'll try the tinsel idea too.  The jumps at the yard are the sort where the cups are attached on - it goes from 1/2 a foot to 2ft3!!  but there is some normal ones in a big field, i'll see if i can use those as a chase me charlie sounds fun :)  i'll deffiently try a grid too, i tried recently and my mum didn't let me in case he hurt himself - honestly - he is a schoolmaster not a young pony lol!  I made a tiny jump with buckets as wings, there is some of those roadwork planks in this barn behind the stables, they are sort of shiny and quite skinny, but have bits at the side to rest them on something.

I've worked out how to make a course of about 5 fences in the teeny arena - if i need anything more i can ask to use the biggest field.

There you go then :-) Glad you've got some good ideas, let us know how it goes! The roadwork planks I mentioned are the ones you have too, slim and shiny (so can be very scary which is a goood thing as it gets your horse used to scary jumps hehe) with little bits at the sides to rest them on things (jump cups, wings etc). Good luck and hope you and AJ have fun.
