Does anyone know a fast way to put weight on a horse??

Well my horse Tessa has lost alot of weight recently. Due to the fact of change in her diet. (limited hay + feed to all grass)

She went quite colic-y and lost alot of weight.

She is now having two feeds a day (honey chop, mix, sugerbeet ect)

And we have ordered some hay from the local farmer....

Any other sugestionss???

I would reccomend calm and condition or weight gain from allen and page. has worked really well for my thoroughbred. i give him two round scoops of molly chop and 1 scoop of calm and condition 2/3 times a day depending if i can get up for a dinner.. feeding little and often will beneift your horse rather than big feeds. over a couple of weeks you'll noticed a big change.. Not to mention unlimited hayledge all the time.

I would change the mix to a conditioning type one, instead of a basic mix.  Plus alfalfa has more calories than a basic chaff.  Plus the good quality protein in alfalfa is good for topline.

You dont want to put weight on too fast tho.  She should have adlib hay too.  Fibre is important and that will reduce the chances of colic as it keeps the gut working properly.

hi i would highly recommend Baileys outshine. Its amazing stuff but if you find that too expensive, Baileys No6 Endurance mix (doesn't need to be for endurance horses) but its fab, it has outshine in it and i swear by it, it put weight on my TB and i will never ever take him off it and with regular work he has kept the weight on, everyone that has asked for my advise in terms of weight gain i have recommend this too. Also another baileys great is No1 cereal.

I swaer by bailey these 3 especially for weight gain and weight holder!! In fact i suggest you call Baileys advise line they are fab and they really helped me out.

Main thing really is most horses need something else other than just forage abd bulk feed i.e. chaff!! (except for good doers that is!!) oh i wish!!

Good luck.  let us know how you get on, oh and heres the link to baileys...

Oh and before you ask - no i'm not a baileys rep!!!! ha ha, but would defiantely appreciate the commission!! :0)

Another excellent feed is Spiller conditioning cubes. When I bought my Warmblood he was the skinniest horse I'd ever seen. Tried D&H Build up mix first of all. Although he put a it of weight on, it didn't do anything special. Put him on the Spillers which was recommended by a friend and within a few Weeks as stated on the bag, he improved beyond my wildest dreams! His rump became rounded, he had improved topline and just looked amazing. Recommend it to anyone :)

My mare recently suffered weight loss & after feeding her twice daily with a conditioning mix , a high fibre chaff & some nuts she looked alot better very quickly. I also always made sure she had a constant supply of hay. Blue chip feed is also very good for top line & condition it is however quite expensive but is good!!!

I had a really similar problem with my old thoroughbred! Careful not to over feed, feeds little and often are ideal as can prevent stomach upsets (you dont want all that expensive new food running straight through! lol) and u dont want the horse to develop collic! I recommend feeding sugabeet, alfa as its higher in calories and then a small amount of baileys endurance mix (dosent need to be for endurance horses but it really does work!) you could then also feed some build up cubes these work wonders! also make sure your horse is warm dont want her using excess fat and energy to keep herself warm! hope this helps!

Hi there! There is a company in North Wales that make conditioning feeds called Frickers Formula. You don't need to feed much and it's dead good. I only know of one horse that became fizzy, but allthe school ponies are fine.

i use baileys no.4 topline conditioning cubes along with mollychop, sugarbeet, competition mix, euqis elements silicon supplement and oils, as this feed is slow releaseing, the conditioning cubes really premote muscle gain, its worked for us and im begining to wonder if shes getting a bit on the porky side, hope this helps
