Hey.

There's 'safe cobs' (google) but they charge around £4000 for their horses.

Then you could look on Horsemart, horsequest, horse finder etc.

You could put wanted ads up in your local paper & online.

You should look for an older cob. Look in magazines, online and write wanted ads. Good luck (: x

Re: tips for buying a first horse

look for a good allrounder schoolmaster. it doesn't generally have to be a cob, your best best would to be to look at riding schools in your area, and see if they have an older horse that has seen & done everything.

when you go to look at a horse, always take an experienced person with you & don't feel you need to buy the first thing you see. look about a bit until you find something that you thinks suits, and always get it 5-stage vetted. and don't just see it once, vist 2 or 3 times so you're absolutely sure. the pony i'm in the process of buying right now, i went to see him twice so i could definately make my mind up.

i wish you the best of luck, it's not easy finding a horse that will be your soulmate, but don't give up...your next horse could be right round the corner!! xxx

Re: tips for buying a first horse

thanks mel- i hope so- my husband knows  how much this means to me so is giving me his full wage in september to buy my own horse, to love and care for - i swear, this horse will have the happiest home ever - as ive said before, im a novice, i  know it and admit it. This horse will be loved,if anythng id call the vet too much - i certainly wouldnt have loose shoes.

I know the yard owner aty this yard, and the other girls - he knows we have been messed around, this horse wil have a good home - despite me being a so called novice

Genuine people help - like ive said before, what i lack in knowledge i will make up in true love

Re: tips for buying a first horse

i have gone for the mature horse Tia was supposed to be 14 turned out to be around 24! but she was so good at teaching me so much and as she was mature she didnt act stupid very often. Pride was 14 and he has taught me more again. When you do buy go with a strong head and a bit of soft heart. dont go for the sob story sell. Go with what you need, the right age ( give or take a year or two) the right height, the right temperament and the right attitude. Both were ex ODE and were more than happy to happy hack or motor a bit when asked. Go with questions written down and make sure you get an answer to everything. I think some of mine sounded daft were important to me, like how does he act when having legs hosed down, what's he like for rugging up, ask for their farriers phone number and vets phone number, so you can call them to find out how the horse reacted when they treated them! sorry for the essay.

Make sure you take someone with you who knows about horses maybe an instructor this will help any more problems in the future wish id taken more people with me to see my first horse even though i had a 5 stage vetting they failed to notice that the horse was dopped up and lame on all her legs! If you do not know anyone ask at a local riding stables or at the yard you are at.
