I too am a 'traditionalist' but always open to new ideas and methods but I simply do not think there's is a quicker alternative to established methods of getting a horse to accept the rider through confidence/balance/progression etc etc-all the things that the scales of training endorse. As for gadgets then some are needed and some are not. The indians were quite clever but brutal really, the rope around the jaw hurt the horse like hell as it placed pressure on sensitive nerve endings/pressure points etc. Much the way bitless bridles do. So really there's no right way or wrong way and no kind or cruel way, its all about achieving what you want with your horse in the most comfortable way possible for you both and what works for one may not work for another. Still hate flashes though!!!!!!

everyone has different views, i cant stand there only being one correct answer! i ride my mare in a dutch gag, grackle and martingale for jumping and road work, and snaffle with flash for schooling! i've had her from a baby and she has not had rough handling, or to soft, she is just a strong old girl and i would prefer to hack out in this equip rather than pulling her teeth out and my arms! but you know best i'm sure! [:X]

Some horses are absolute buggers for getting their tongues over the bit and it is really not funny when they do and decide to 'go'. In these cases I think that a flash can be very useful. I certainly used one on my last horse who did this a lot. However on my new horse the flash makes him bronk down the road and he does not need one so I just have a plain caversson. In the right place and the right time I think that most pieces of kit can be useful, but I am a big advocate of starting with a snaffle and caversson nose band and taking it from there! Too many people view accessories as necessities and have them ‘because the bridle came with it’.
