does anyone drive their pony?

today i've just acquired a trap and harness for my shetland pony. i think everything is in place correctly, although i've got to admit, i'm a bit baffled by the harness and how exactly it fits to the trap!

any tips?

Hari drives and is excellent at it, he's not a pony though! He is out of action at the moment due to being lame.      Hari and a local farmer has taught me to drive and the  farmer showed me which bits went where with the harness, mine also came with a picture guide. Which bits are you most baffled about? I presume its not a harness with a collar (these are a bit simpler to suss out)

Have a look in my gallery as there is a few pictures of Hari wearing his harness which might help if it's similar. Has your pony been broken to drive?, or are you starting from scratch?

Will talk you through it if you like but probably wont make a lot of sense without someone actually showing you in person. Do you know any aged farmers or travelers or is there a local driving club?

Ah thanks, let me know if you get stuck with any of it. Minty is a bit of a looker (as are the minis!), I have always wanted to ride a Fjord. He must be very hardy to live in Scotland. Do you rug him in winter or does he grow his own like Hari?! x

Last winter he was clipped because of the work he was doing, and when it was very cold he had his MW turnout and a stable rug on underneath. The winter before that he grew his own winter coat but still had a rug on him most of the time. :) x

Re: does anyone drive their pony?

We've broken one of our old show ponies for driving. There are a couple of excellent books that helped us. One was 'picture guide to harness' the other was 'picture guide to driving. They gave us the basics including how to fir harness. Both are available on the internet and aren't expensive.
