Lip Smacking Pacer!

I am after advice again please! I have been part loaning a 13 yr old 16.1 gelding for about 6 months and he is an absolute sweetie. However it's the ridden work that has issues. He paces in trot - but this is much improved since schooling, polework, lunging. recently we have attempted canter - only when he feels right - if that makes sense. this feels understandably a little weird as his legs get confused. Afterwards he gets very excited and then cannot seem to trot on the diagonal, it's back to pacing. He is slightly unbalanced on both reins. His head goes up, my hands go up and we are then all over the place. And all whilst being ridden he smacks his bottom lip in a rhythmic one second fashion. He has a french link snaffle, has his back & teeth checked regularly. I am not sure whether we have the wrong bit, (should we go bitless?) we should be doing certain things when schooling, or carry on as we are (as i say he is so much improved) & the lip smacking is a quirky part of his nature. Any ideas? thanks

I know one mare who does that lip smacking. I was reading this months issue of Pony Magazine and there was an article about facial features that guided you to what sort of personality your pony/horse has. There was one on flapping bottom lips "usually means the pony is worried, confused and doesn't like to be alone." Maybe your pacer is finding trying to trot normally and cantering a bit too much for his brain to cope with? Maybe you need to go a bit slower??

that is a idea, although I have only tried to canter him twice in the 6 months I have been riding him, and that's only in the last week. But we don't know too much about his early years, maybe it stems from way back. He does it in walk too - oh dear!

maybe just slow things down and stick to mainly walk and some trot. have you got someone else with a horse and that you could ride with. this might make him relax and he'll have another horse to 'copy'. sam xxx

pickles re the cantering if you look there is a thread about cantering a pacer. I will go find and bring it back up to the top for you. the lip smacking sounds like just a freaky wee thing he does!! my own pacer will slip back into it when he loses balance but i found a lot of work in the pessoa helped him to connect his front and back ends. dont allow him to continue get back the walk and once it is in a nice forward walk ask for trot again. it is physically very hard to return to diagonal trot from pacing.
