if i was you id find out about any local shooting syndicates in your area, have a word wit the shoot captain to see if he can recommend any gd gun dog trainers, i know in my dads shoot we have tons of good dog trainers, who are amazing when it comes to working their dogs, ok they may not agree to help you train your dog, but they can give you tips and recommend any gd books to buy or even lend u if your lucky and flutter your eye lashes lol u could try puppy training classes, but if you want him to be a proper working gun dog id talk to the people who train them as puppy classes would be too basic and they wont teach you how to train your dog to pick a pheasant up with out breaking the skin.

The best way to start is to make sure your dog listens to you and is proficient in the basics.. Are you new to shooting? Let me know whats about you/weather you have knowledgeable friends that could help etc. I trained mine myself-its great fun but not easy!

I have never shot but my boss does and would liek a dog to take. Sprocket is pretty good at  his obedience, he does sit stay and come, he will wait till you tell him its ok before he eats, and he will sit when you throw his ball and only go after it when you say go, he will bring it back but never drops it, just puts it in your hand, think alot of it is hard wired into him! he also waits for all humans to go through the door before he goes and will stay outside till you tell him to come in!

he is also not gun shy, he lives with our small toddler so is pretty bomb proof, we have taken him to noe shoot and he wasn't phased at all!1

Absolutely great, you have just about everything you need to start to train your dog for shooting! I would ask your boss if he would like to help you to train your dog. He will be able to help you decide what it is that you want to achieve with sprocket. Keep up the great work you have been doing! Sprocket being steady to lots of different situations is important. There is nothing worse than a dog that runs off in the heat of the moment and cant/wont be stopped, and as a result stirrs up pheasants at the wrong time! And its hard to correct! Just remember that theres no rush, its exactly the same as training a horse, too much at once and they get confused, so make sure that hes happy and understands before you move on. And dont drill,i became in danger of doing that!  And remember that its supposed to be fun for you both. I havnt used it myself but the NOB'S website should be good and a book for reference may/may not be useful! Have you got any other q,s? Im a shooter as well as a rider you see!

aww, i have a black lab who is HUGE which we use for shooting with and ive just got another little springer spaniel whos now 16weeks old and wer gonna train her up too.

You need to get them used to loud noises and close gun shots from an early age so they are not scared of them and you need to have a realy strong bond with your dog and make sure he knows whos boss and he has to do what you say, when you say. They need to be quick and fast when you tell them to be but then they have to be slow and quiet when you want them to be, they need to be realy on the ball and alert and not get scared or confused in difficult situations.

Teach basic commands and training to begin with thn move onto more serious stuff like going on a mini hunt and see if you can find a local shoot captain nearby or something...hope it all goes well for you both  [=

We are havign a great time trainign as he just loves to learn, you can see the cos in his head going round whenever you ask him something new! will try that site, i know my boss wants him to pick up, am assuming that it collect the birds after they have been shot, we play hide and seek with his ball i the field i hiode it whilst he waits at the gate and he goes on the hunt! he loves it!
