funny noise when trotting

Has anyone any idea why a gelding would make funny 'grunting' noise when trotting? actually it sounded more like when my dog is about to be sick that sort of gutteral boak.

Re: funny noise when trotting

The noise comes from the sheath.  It is trapped air being expelled.  It DOES NOT mean the sheath needs cleaning.  It just depends how the horse is moving and how tense/relaxed it is..   I have one who only makes that noise when he is worried/excited... so great for shows... not!

Whether a horse makes the noise depends up on its conformation 'up there'.

There is nothing you can do about it, stallions do it too although the charming name for it is 'Gelding Squeek'

yeh, just something youve gotta live with!!unfortunately!people do tend to say it's coz it needs cleaning, but i stopped believing that when shaky squeaked the day after i had cleaned it (very thoroughly!!) you do get the odd know it all who'll criticise u for not cleaning it often enough,to which i always reply "well,u clean it for me then if im so incapable!" coz its usually mares owners, who wouldnt have to do it anyway!thay soon shut up when u offer to let them do it to "show u how"!!even if they take u up on the offer chances are they will squeak anyway afterwards so they soon decide its not coz it needs cleaning!!

well ive always been told it just means the sheath needs cleaning.

Thats what ive read in books, thats what ive been taught in college and it is what i know from my own experiences.

so after a good clean it should be fine. If the horse still makes the noise after cleaning then it usually means that not all the "stuff" has been got out.

hope this helps

I have never cleaned a horses sheath and 3 out of 5 of my horses were geldings. The only time they 'made the noise' are due to excitement and nerves.

I dont mind it, on my current gelding i use it as another track of when hes working correctly from behind as he squeaks!

I dont clean sheaths, if you have to then you should just use water as anything else destroys the bacteria up there making it prone to infection. Once they are cleaned they need cleaning regularly for the same reason, as you remove the self cleaning bacteria.

Excessive grott 'up there' might be a contributory factor for some horses...  but it is not THE reason for the noise.   If you don't clean sheaths you don't end up with so much grott 'up there' so you avoid the problem.  Methinks some people simply enjoy the job of sheath cleaning too much... worry, worry, worry...
