insurance company scummy *******s

Get ready for my rant... Now i will be as helpful as I can but I do not appreciate nasty tones in letters that are designed to intimidate you and I wont have it! My horse recently got kicked and spent a few days in horsey hospital. The bill was 1,300 so I made a claim to my insurance co who are very well known. Firstly I got a very ****ty letter asking me to explain in writing why I had not sought authorisation to continue treatment if the bill was going to be over 1,000.00 I didnt know it would I replied - I did however tell their adjudicators the day it happened EXACTLY what treatment he was to have by e-mail, and telephone. I do not, I reminded them (having never made a cliam in the four years I have used them) have experience as to the costs of such treatment and my vet didn't say. The injury was in january - they havent paid my vet bill yet (who worked damn hard on my horse behalf) - it is still being adjuducated. Then they send another snotty letter requesting that I give the address of the owner of the horse that kicked mine. I was alreasdy a bit peeved at their tone by this time so I advised I did not have pernission to forward that information; if they cared to tell me what they wnated it for I would ask the lady if she was happy for me to do it. I have heard nothing. BUT MORE THAN THAT...AHHHHHH!!! On my claim form I had to put any previous treatment my horse had had - I put that the vet had come out to inspect a lump that was diagnosed as an INFECTED FLY BITE/STING, which went away with topical cream. I have just received a letter stating that my horse was no longer covered for sarcoids, lumps, melanomas etc (any kind of bump imaginable, and none of which go away after treatmnt with a cream after four days!) due to his 'predisposition'. What utter garbage. I am enraged...has anyone has similar? Can anyone recommend a decent insurer? [:(!][:(!][:(!]

Be nice to your neddy

Hello, I also had alot of problems with a certain insurance company, when I claimed for my tb mare, (they are advertised everywhere)and are cheaper a month. But when you make a claim you have to chase them & they take ages to settle, also the excess ended up being rather alot. My vets said if people are insured with this company they want payment up front and the customer will have to claim it back. I got told shorted saffed, and training issues. I no loonger have my tb mare, but have an irish cob who is insured with Kbis, haven't had to claim yet but very hepful with queries & emails.

I think I know who you are talking about. They don't just do horse insurance but a whole range of leisure activities... I know so many people that have had problems with this company. They are cheap but when you try to make a claim they will do all they can not to pay out.

I use Scottish Equestrian - they are brilliant and when I needed to make a claim it was so easy and hassle free.

The company I use is PetPlan. I've so far avoided claiming for the horses, but I have had to claim for one of my Dobermanns. PetPlan made it very easy and dealt with the vet direct - I didn't have to get involved, which was fantastic at a difficult time.

Hi, I have cancelled my policy with a certain very well know insurer last week as they would not pay out a claim for my mare. I had had the policy for 9 year and never made a claim but the premiums keep going up! Now with Pet Plan, they have paid out for every claim I know about!

Re: insurance company scummy *******s

Hi, i had a very similar problem last year. My mare decided to colic after 5 pm on a friday evening and was rushed to the vets for emergency surgery. On arrival at the surgery the vet said my horse had approximately 15 mins before she would die so they needed to operate immediately. She was insured so i agreed. The vet faxed my insurers to inform them that they were operating and would need to make a claim. I had to phone a further 2 times before a claim form arrived and after it was returned i was asked to declare any previous treatment, i did this willingly. After weeks of hearing nothing despite phone calls and letters on my part, i was finally told they would not pay as my horse had a sarcoid the size of a 5pence piece removed from her leg (using a band not surgery!)2 years earlier and i hadn't informed them, therefore my insurance was invalid! My bill totalled over £6ooo so i informed the financial ombudsmen of this insurance company, they paid up 2 days later! This was 5 months after i made the claim! I immediately swapped to Petplan and they have been very helpful with any enquiries ive made! They also have quite a few different catorgies so you don't pay the same for a retired horse as a working horse! Marvellous!x

I'd be interested to know which insurer this was too. I'm with Equestrian Direct, but have never had to claim as of yet so can't really comment.

i will keep my horses insured but do know exactly what you mean!

i had only ahd my horse Dolly for about two months when she sadly developed sarcoids...one over her eye, adn one on her hind leg. Luckily my vet had seen her previous to the ydeveloped so he knew that they were new.

In all the treatment came to almost 1k, an when i put my claim in my insurance company tried every trick in the book to try and avoid paying out! In fact it took a very angry letter from my vet to the insurance company stating that she ahd not had them when i bought her, adn if they didn't pay out her would start advising all his clients about the companeis shoddy service tha tthey argeed to pay!

i will alwasy keep my horses insuranced, but it does put a sour taste in your mouth when atthe moment you most need some kind service, you haev to fight tooth and nail to get what you deserve!

I would recommend Scottish equestrian Insurance Services. They paid out for my laminitis claims very quickly WITHOUT FUSS! I found them to be friendly and helpful. I have been with them 5 years and have found they are the cheapest out there - often half the price of other companies and no nasty surprises regarding amount of excess on claims etc as with a company who put leaflets in Mags! I no longer even bother ringing around for quotes as I pay for two what most companies quoted for one of mine!!! They also offer discounts for multiple horses, freezemarks etc.
