HELP!!!canter & training reins

I have a 17hh clydesdale x tb novice 9yr old, who works nicely in an outline in walk and trot, but struggles a lot with canter. My instructer recently moved, so i need HELP!!! (i am 15). He learnt to come round in trot after a lot of work because he is very stubborn and was very badly schooled when i got him when he was 5. in canter, he doesn't understand what i want, and simply breaks into trot if i use my hands at all, which of course i try not to, but he just doesn't understand. So after working at this for a few months, i thought about perhaps getting him training reins. No, i do not mean draw reins as i know they are restrictive and quite frankly mean, but on the John Whitaker website there are things called training reins that attach up at the poll and apply pressure there. I was wondering if anyone could help me as i am at a loss of what to do and i don't know if i should try these or not. I will be getting side reins, but he is not easy to lunge, as he is a bit too 'cuddly' for that and just wants to come into the middle all the time, and only trots around without much enthusiasm. Please help!!!

For the moment I would just concentrate on the rhythm/balance of your canter especially as he is a novice large horse. Once you have the ryhthm and the balance it will become so much easier for him and you.

Once you have the rhythm and balance you will need to work on impulsion giving him a half halt every now and then to get him thinking and focusing on you.

It will all fall into place

Just had a look at your picture and you need your hands higher and more forwards to allow him to stretch into the outline, hope that helps
