Re: Itchy Legs?

I should imagine that she possibly has feather mites. Does she keep stamping her legs?  Two of the heavier horses up our yard have just had an injection for this (think its meant for cattle but they use it on horses)  other than this I would personally take her feathers off.  Also if she comes in be careful of what bedding you use as untreated shavings carry these mites in.  Hope that helps : )

Re: Itchy Legs?

It does sound like mites, my heavy cob can suffer from this, his feathers are off and I regularly wash his legs with hibiscrub.  You can tell when he is gettting bothered by them becuase he stamps and tries to rub his legs on what ever he can.  Try and see whats best, I was told that keeping their feathers was best, especially in winter as they act as a protector but weighing this up with the bother he has with mites I took them off.

Good luck
