crying writing this literally.

today must of been the worst day for a long time with poser, he actually put someone in hospital. I know you must be thinking christ why let someone ride him or what a stuipid horse but you cant help but love them even if they are complete twits. This lady who rode him is very experienced with TB's and she actually had him before i did looking after him for his old owners. She had him for a year. she knows him inside out. So since hes been going mental not letting me lunge him without rearing,bucking and kicking out and closing in on me she offered to help and i took her up on it. She lead him around up and down the lane for a decent 15/20 mins and first 10 mins he was trotting, and excitable but he started to calm down so she decided to get on him (completely her choice, like i said i dont want anyone telling me it was a stupid idea, he was perfectly calm when she decided this) he was foot perfect walking away from home, as soon as we turned home he bucked and reared and got her off and cut her eyebrow up..it was a deep cut to the skull. We warned her, and she was perfectly happy to get on him, and again, was her choice.

This horse is an absolute nightmare, i got him when he was 5 but was turning 6 about 6 weeks after we got him, ive had him a year and hes nearly 7. He was a perfect horse that schooled in an outline, jumped you name it. But now hes flipped and i dont know what to do.

People say lunge him, but he keeps rearing, bucking, closing in on me and you say push him forward, i try. Im really loosing all hope and my confidence has hit rock bottom, i really am not knowing how much more i can take. I love him, hes my baby, always will be. But how can i think positive when i cant see any light at the end of the tunnel? He has so much potential to be a british event horse and anything i want him to be but is this the right thing to do..to keep him and carry on trying?

Please help with any tips on how to lunge him and to get his naughty habbits out his head, earn respect, be able to have a normal horse again.

* HAS HAD HIS BACK DONE AND GOT A FITTED SADDLE, HAD HIS TEETH FILED, AND HAD HIS FEET TRIMMED.

I'm so sorry that you are really upset atm but i can fully understand why ! This is actually a dangerous situation for you so you really need to be sooooo careful. I know this is going to sound expensive but if he was mine I would arrange for the Vet to give him a thorough check up before proceeding with anything else. He might have an undetected problem which is causing the erratic behaviour. After the Vet then take a look at his routine and what he's being fed. By what you've been saying I can't help but think that he's in some sort of pain, especially as he has been good in the past. does he get plenty of turnout ? Have you tried any inhand work with him ? If you do this please be careful and always wear your hat, gloves and sturdy boots. just simple things like teaching him to back up, walk, halt,  turns on the forehand etc will increase your bond and build some trust. If he is too strong for you in hand then teach him to respect a pressure halter, we use one sometimes on our youngster and it's really helped with her manners.

 

I wish you all the luck in the world with him as it's clear how much you love him but having said that i now need to be totally honest. Your safety comes first ! You obviously want a horse that you can enjoy without having a knot in your stomach all of the time, you might need to be brave and make a decision to part with him and find a horse that suits your needs, one that you can trust and have fun with. Don't let it all get you down, please let me know how you get on with him, take care and chin up XX

Oh dear that picture reminds me of ZZ in her day of hating work!

OK so you've had teeth, saddle and back checked - but have you had second opinions on all these things - not being funny but to really rule out any form of discomfort it is worth getting different EDT, Back person and saddle fitter etc - I had 3 different lots with ZZ so I could be 100% certain.

Next, have you done a Bute Trial to rule out pain? Has he been throughly examined by a Vet so you can be absolutely certain he is in no pain and this is all behavioural?  I know we all have adifferent view on horses behaviour but I really do not believe that horses just turn bad overnight without reason, it could be pain, lack of understanding, unclear signals from handler to horse, the horse just not understanding what is asked of it.

Because you love him so much you are going to be slight clouded with your judgement (been there done that and got the T Shirt) so it is worth considering sending him away for re-schooling from scratch going right back to basics, but find someone well recognised and who is totally understanding and you need to be involved so you can learn/grow together.  If you do nothing things could get worse and even if he does not really mean to be nasty someone could get seriously injured or worse, these are huge creatures and one wrong move can kill!

Finally, sorry, but if you are feeling negative and loosing your confidence then he will do what horses do, take control of the situation - they are so sensitive he will sense any negative feelings and react as he thinks he needs too.  If you really do not want to part with him then you will need to invest in him to solve the problem - although sadly there are the odd ones that you never find the problem and they are always just hard work - I ended up retiring my mare at only 7 because she was just so dangerous to ride, but perfect in every other respect but like you I totally loved her so decided I was happy to have her as just a pet - she changed immediately and is the most gentle loving little horse - unless she sees a bridle or saddle!

Ok, IT was this womans CHOICE to get on him, with full knowledge of information given. It is not you being stupid/ bad owner or anything like that.

Some TB's are just are real pain in the arse some are lovely. I knew/handled a TB that one day no problem with anyone next day, kicking farriers about, rearing and bucking just because he was having a tantrum. After lots of ideas, re training slowly changed everything about they was he was handled ridden etc, he was still the same. Some TB have neurological problems. 

Personally i would turn him away for 8 weeks, just bring him in feed and turn out nothing more. After that start from scratch, go back to basics. If after a few months of basic training if he  is still a nightmare i would seriously consider your choices. Good luck and keep us posted.xx

PS i would look at your insurance for 3rd party injuries just in case this woman tries it on.

Hes always had the cheeky side to him but thats just his personality. I always wear my hat and bodyprotector on him when hes ridden and lately since hes been in lunge work ive worn my hat. I cant keep him forward or he throws a hissy fit-and you know how it annoys you when you feel defeated by stoping! Hes been out of work for a good 3 months and 2 weeks ago i started bringing him into work but hes had different opinions about that!

I will try just leading him around the school and stopping him and backing him up a few times but then if he has other idea's to dissagree with this and decides to go up then obviously he puts me into danger and theres no point in getting hurt over a horse.

i shall get another vet out and see if he can check him all over ect and i'll get in a diff saddler to get other opinions.

Sending him off to get re-schooled is a good idea but then i would feel ashamed of myself for giving in on a horse that has potential and for myself for not trying VERY hard to get him into routein.

Thank you so much everyone for idea's and help, will keep posting on here to let you know how things are doing!

I think he has the measure of you. If you stop when he starts having a hissy fit then he is getting what he wants. If he does have a hissy fit continue to work him for a couple of minutes on a different exercise, so although he has stopped one thing you have asked for another bit of work out of him.  Hi had a mare that when she ran at her old owner on the lunge, the owner would drop the lung line and jump out of the school. So when i took her over she did the same,standing up to a charging mare was really scary. I sidestepped at the last minute and then continued to lunge. After a few tries of this she realised it wasnt working and was good to lunge. Keep you chin up. x

You really need to get some help with this horse. It can be the hardest thing in the world to be positive when you have setback after setback and once you get into that negative thinking cycle any work you do with your horse will suffer because you go into it with a (subconcious) bad/negative attitude which gives off a negative vibe which I swear to you your horse will pick up on instantly !!!

 

You need a fresh pair of eyes on him, someone who is not emotionally attached to the horse and can give you unbiased advice and maybe give you some hope and reinspire you.

 

You need to re-establish a balance and partnership with your horse as it sounds like he is confused about his place in the world and his role with you. A professional/knowledgable horse person can help you work on this with loose schooling, in-hand, ground work etc techniques.

 people say to get someone in that doesnt know him so therefore who isnt emotionally attached to him then they can be cruel to be kind to him. But i dont want him getting beaten or anything just a good place to know where he stands with me but also with humans. I dont know wether to do this?

sorry dont have time to read everyones replies so sorry if i repeat stuff!

firstly, please dont feel guilty, it was entirely the womens choice to ride him, and sadly even if they dont play up that much it is easy to get badly hurt.

some horses are very sensitive to spring and the change of sugar level in the grass at this time of year, i know a number of horsses who go a bit fiesty, border line crazy, at this time of year for up to a month and theen calm down- this could easily have something to do with it.

my friend had a tb who was ok when she got him, but she later found out had a troubled past, he then became unridedable, it took her 2 years and she decided to learn all about natural horsemanship. she now rides him bitless as he would rear and buck with a bit in his mouth.

i dont know what his routine is, but i have found from expirience (i have a tb ex race horse and have ridden and looked after alot of tb's) that the more turn out the better- my boy used to be so stressed after a night in the stable. since october he has been living out nearly 24-7 in a heard and he is 100 times happier, way less stressed and tense. just an idea, you never know.

i would continue to try and lunge, but with hat and gloves and long lunging whip and line, force him to work, dont let him come in, if he starts bucking just hold on tight and whip him on, he has to realise it's time to work. however, if you struggle to hold him and you know someone who is stronger ask them to hold the lunge line and you can still stand next to him and use clear voice commands

my horses are my medicine, without them im even more crazy!

 this is exactly the position i was in a couple of weeks back. my mare is 6 coming up 7 and bby does she have behaviour problem,yea shes a mare there all tempremental but honestly!

she used to be a pain to lunge reaaring kicking into you,folding in dead stops etc. you couldnt get on her and trot she used to aim to throw you off. so after trying and trying my confidence hit rock bottom so guess what i did, shake myself off,getting a goal set in my mind and that night walked down to the yard confident.

i took her into the arena and walked her around on the leadrope halting and walking back,then i would make her walk forward i done this for about 20 mins every night and after a week i could do it without the leadrope,then eventually shee followed me everywere,we had a bond!!!!!

so then i got on and had the first steady happt trot in a while! so now im just building up excersises in the school inhand.

Have you had him scoped to see if he has ulcers, just a thought as he has changed from being a nice horse to being like he is now. It really does sound like there is pain somewhere. You have already said that you are goig to have everything re-checked which is a good start. Have you though about using an RA(from intelligent horsemanship) to come out and have a look at him. It could be worth while as they will then be able to tell you how to deal with his behaviour if he isn't in pain. Also if you have the money i wouold have a talk to a professional about havng him reschooled and explain all his behaviour to them so they know before hand what they are dealing with.

Hope you can get to the bottom of it and help him to be a happy horse again.
