RE: What horse is good for a first horse?

most people would go for a veteran pony but to be honest my first pony was a five year old !

in my opinion spanish purebreds are really well trained and gentle but they are not cheap

hope that helped

I think you can't beat an allround cob. They're friendly and mostly always safe. My fist horse was a cob but he was older too so was a real confidence builder. Just don't get too old or it can lead to future problems. Hope this helped!:)

i would say a school master or mistress, welsh sections pony's are fantastic for this if you are petite/young rider, and cobs for maybe an older teenager/novice, there are a variety, medium weight, heavy weight and light weights, both also great to learn on, my first ever pony was a welsh section x shetland and he was amazing little boy, being being 6 i wasnt very tall! you might find horses advertised as, 'strong but a safe ride schoolmaster' in my experience that has meant they just need the right bit for a bit extra control :)

hope this has helped! :)

Welsh ponies are the best for your first pony, they are good temperd and are just really good riding ponies.

For my first pony I  had an ex-show pony,12.2hh about 16 years, was  bombproof, had arthritis so could only walk - canter although the day we thought she was lame she bolted with me. hehe

You would probably want an older experienced horse that is a good all rounder. Take someone experienced with you when viewing horses ( I asked my instructer to come with me and she really helped. ) and view them more than once perhaps the second time asking if you can do everything yourself but just be supervised by the owner. Always get the owner to ride them at every gait before you do. Also try to find out why the horse is being sold. If possible consider asking to have the horse on trial first - this is when you pay a deposit and bring the horse to wherever you would keep it if you owned it and doing all the regular activities with it to see if it is suitable this is good as it is easier to get it vet checked and see how the horse is with its change of environment. Breeds don't really make a difference as lots of breed like welsh section A's and appaloosa's and exmoor ponies are said to have good temperament but you can't rely on this as behaviour depends on the background, comfort and training of the horse. Hope this helps!

Something with experience. You dont want to be the one trying to teach it how to behave. it should know the basic rules and should be willing to learn and try new experiences, and new things. a good hight for you, maybe a fraction bigger? something easy to make a bond with!

but beware- horses get excited when they go to new places, dont give up on it if its hyper straight away, it will need to settle!

goodluck :) xoxo

fair is fair.
